After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Spider-Man: Homecoming
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2had its time in the spotlight, many are already looking at the upcoming release of
Spider-Man: Homecoming, which will be the first installment in the third iteration of the famous Marvel character. Its biggest draw is that it is, in fact, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tony Stark playing a pivotal role in the film. Another thing to look forward to with this iteration is the introduction of the new comic-iconic villain for Spidey to face off. And because Spidey has bar none, the best rogues gallery in Marvel, the topic of the potential villains Spidey can face off in the inevitable sequel gets brought up a lot, which
Tom Holland himself addressed in an intervie with Brazilian site Cinepop.
“There’s so many good villains, I really like Mysterio, I like Kraven. I really like the “Clone Saga.” I think it could be really cool if Peter, or Spider-Man has to fight people with the same powers as him. Spider Woman’s super cool. … I think she’s called Spider-Girl, who is his clone. They kind of like hit it off and they take their masks off and they’re like… [shocked look] What the hell! They’re like the same person, but she’s just a girl. I think that’s really cool.”
There are some great ideas for a potential sequel. Kraven could potentially push Parker to his limit with him hunting the poor high schooler through NYC and Marvel Studios itself to dark and mature with a Spidey story. While the Clone Saga is a rather controversial storyline, mostly due to its convoluted plot threads, it would be a rather interesting story to tackle at a later date. Maybe Ben Reilly could be played by
Toby Maguire or
Andrew Garfield. Some have hoped to see a multi-dimensional story after the events of Doctor Strange Iron Man
Doctor Strangebut the current iteration of Spidey seems more appropriate in
Iron Man‘s more science-based storylines. Holland’s Spider-Woman clone comments allude to the Ultimate version of the character, a line of comics the MCU derives so much from so it’s not crazy to see it happen one day.
A personal highlight from
Holland‘s list is Mysterio. A character that has quite a history in cinema and theater could potentially allow for Marvel Studios to offer their own look into Hollywood. Each film takes place in one year of Parker’s high school life and seeing them on a field trip to L.A. could be an interesting way to introduce the character.
What are your ideas for a Spidey sequel? Who do you want to see make his MCU debut?
