CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina was tabbed the No. 2 overall national seed in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, marking the program’s seventh national seed since 2007.
“I’m very excited for our team and these kids,” UNC head coach Mike Fox told reporters after the NCAA Tournament pairings were announced. “They’re being rewarded for a lot of hard work and believing, good character and leadership. That’s the coolest thing from my perspective right now.”
The Tar Heels (47-12) are making their 16th NCAA Tournament appearance in 19 seasons under Fox and their first since 2014. UNC is 60-33 in NCAA Tournament games since Fox took over in 1999.
UNC has won 16 of its last 19 games and clinched the ACC Coastal Division title along the way. The Tar Heels made it to the ACC Tournament’s championship game on Sunday before falling to Florida State, 7-3.
The Chapel Hill Regional will open on Friday as No. 2 seed Florida Gulf Coast and No. 3 seed Michigan play the first game at 1 p.m. UNC hosts No. 4 seed Davidson at 6 p.m. The Tar Heels topped the Wildcats, 7-6, in extra innings on May 9.
The winner of the Chapel Hill Regional will play the winner of the Houston Regional in the Super Regional round next weekend.
“I’m excited and I think our team is excited,” junior outfielder Brian Miller said. “I think we’re deserving. It’s cool to meet the goals that we had set after the past two years of being disappointed this time of the year.”
