Angelina Jolie Pitt To Direct Netflix Movie, First They Killed My Father

Angelina Jolie Pitt is the latest Hollywood superstar to commit her talent to Netflix’s burgeoning original-film strategy.

Jolie Pitt will direct “First They Killed My Father,” an adaptation of Cambodian human-rights activist Loung Ung’s memoir about how she survived the deadly, oppressive Khmer Rouge government. Ung and Jolie Pitt wrote the script, and Jolie Pitt will produce the film alongside Rithy Panh, who directed the Oscar-nominated “The Missing Picture.”

Ung and Jolie Pitt first met in 2001, after the Oscar-winning star of “Girl, Interrupted” read Ung’s memoir. They became friends over the years and worked on developing a screenplay adaptation. “First They Killed My Father” will be submitted to major international festivals, according to Netflix, and will debut on the streaming service in late 2016. The movie will be released in both English and Khmer.
